Fifty-three issues of the Quindaro Chindowan newspaper survive dating from May 13, 1857 through June 12, 1858. The logo of the newspaper is shown at left in somewhat stylized form due to the poor quality of the reproduction. The image illustrates a rainbow over the new city with a group of sticks bound by ribbon in the foreground. The name 'Quindaro' is a Wyandot word meaning 'bundle of sticks.' The town's translation is "In Union There is Strength." The word Chin-do-wan is Wyandot for 'pilot' or 'leader.' Quindaro did lead in being the first active Free State port on the Missouri River, and found strength in union with other inland stations on the Underground Railroad.
