Quindaro Nancy (Brown) Guthrie

Quindaro N. (Nancy) Brown was the daughter of Adam Brown a Chief of the Wyandot Tribe. Abelard Guthrie had been appointed registrar of the U.S. Land Office in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, at the time of the Wyandot's removal to Kansas in 1843. Abelard met and fell in love with Quindaro Brown. He followed her to Kansas and married Quindaro over the objections of her father. Abelard was later adopted into the Wyandot Tribe as Tah-keh-yoh-shrah-tseh, 'the man with two brains,' because of his demonstrated intelligence. Quindaro Guthrie was able to convince her tribespeople to sell thier land to Charles Robinson of the Quindaro town company for the townsite. In appreciation, the town was named for her. Abelard became the first vice president of the new town company.
