Anthropology class from Kansas City, Kansas Community College at statue of John Brown. The statue was dedicated in 1911 at its original location on the campus of Western University. The statue had been built from Italian Marble purchased and commissioned through donations solely from African Americans in what has been called the 'washer woman's fund.' Of the over 3000 visitors on the day of the dedication, nearly half were Anglo Americans who stood in support of the cause for which Brown fought and lost his life. The statue was the first of John Brown in the United States. Statues of John Brown since have been placed in Osawatomie, Kansas which was Brown's center of operations in Kansas, and at Harper's Ferry, where Brown was executed for treason.
