African American Cementary looking north. This cemetery was utilized from about 1865. The municipal cemetery for Quindaro, i.e. the Quindaro cemetery is located at North 38th Street and Parrallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas. By 1865 there are 600 African Americans living in the Quindaro District of Wyandotte County, and records kept by the Parks and Recreation Department for the cemetery are consistent with this date of usage. Although no written records have yet been located as collaboration, in interviews with Steve Collins the late Beulah Sortor claimed that her husband's great, great grandfather, Elisha Sortor had given portions of his land to African American settlers in the Quindaro district who he had previously helped escape from Slavery.
